AIEOs are appointed to work throughout the school. The AEIOs provide support to staff, students and the Aboriginal community in an effort to enhance the effectiveness of school based programs.
The AIEO role is confined to three general areas: 1. Interactive Role (as a support to the school and class teacher, a communication bridge between teacher and student, a positive role model, consultant to the education program and teaching aspects of Aboriginal culture).
2. Liaison Role (between Aboriginal parents and teachers, encouraging parent involvement in school, informing parents of school policies, being a contact for parents and community, establishing and maintaining specialist committees, and conducting home liaison visits).
3. Non-Interactive Role (involved in the formulation of school policy, being a resource person, assist with excursions, perform photocopy duties and prepare resources, liaise with other departments ie DOE, identify and represent the needs of Aboriginal students).
